Man facing power theft charge commits suicide

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 38-year-old man facing charges of power theft and a fine of around Rs. 12 lakhs allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling in his shop at Khajuri Khas in North-East Delhi on Saturday.

According to the police, Hari Chand, a resident of Karawal Nagar in Khajuri Khas and a building material supplier, was found hanging in his ground floor shop at 7-30 a.m. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the private power distribution company BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) had conducted a raid at Hari Chand's house on June 22 this year and allegedly found him and his tenant, Sanjeev Malik, overdrawing power much higher than the sanctioned load.

Along with the pending bill, BYPL slapped a fine of Rs. 11.95 lakhs on Hari and Sanjeev that was payable by July 10. According to BYPL, the accused were using the premises for anodising, electroplating and moulding.

While the total sanctioned load for the premises was 5 KW (for domestic purposes), the accused were illegally drawing 31.13 KW, a BYPL spokesperson said. The police said Sanjeev also ran a flour mill on the premises.

When the accused did not pay up within the stipulated time, BYPL got a case registered against Hari Chand and Sanjeev under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, and as per the guidelines of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission at the Khajuri Khas police station on October 13.

As the police undertook investigations, Sanjeev left the premises and is currently absconding. Hari Chand, facing the huge bill and a case, had been passing through a phase of mental depression for the past couple of months, said the police. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons. Further investigations in the case are under way.
