MADURAI : All families having ration cards would get free colour television sets, immaterial of whether they already owned one, said the Minister for Local Administration, M.K. Stalin. Launching the Tamil Nadu Unemployed Youth Assistance Programme in the district here on Saturday, Mr. Stalin said that many people had hidden their television sets fearing that the enumerators would not include their names in the list of beneficiaries for free television sets. But the Chief Minister had made it clear that all those families having a ration card would get a colour television set. A total of 11,047 unemployed youth registered with the District Employment Office and waiting for employment for more than five years would get monthly assistance under the programme. The assistance to be credited into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries every quarter would be Rs.150 for those who passed Standard X, Rs. 200 for those who had completed XII and Rs.300 for graduates. The Minister said that the doles would help the youth to pay the application fee for various competitive examinations, attending training classes and travel expenses to appear for those examinations. The overwhelming victory of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the recently concluded local body elections was an indicator that people believed that the DMK Government led by Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, would implement all its poll promises. The Collector, T. Udhayachandran, said that the assistance was only a temporary measure for the unemployed youth. The Government had various long-term measures for generating employment opportunities and the district administration would expedite those programmes, he said. The Madurai East MLA, N. Nanmaran, urged the Minister to take steps to fill up the Mariamman Teppakulam with floodwater from the Vaigai for the ensuing float festival. The MLAs P. Moorthy, S.V. Shanmugam, S.S. Ghouse Basha, the Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, and the Deputy Mayor, P.M. Mannan, were among those who spoke. The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, Kirlosh Kumar, welcomed the gathering.
