HYDERABAD: The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has launched an initiative to promote open access information sources in agricultural sciences and technology in India. The initiative was recently launched at the first AGRIS workshop on "Open access in agricultural sciences and technology: Indian initiative" organised at ICRISAT headquarters in Patancheru. Library and documentation specialists from the Indian Council for Agricultural Research ICASR) institutes and State Agricultural Universities and representatives from specialised institutions such as the Indian Institute of Sciences, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, the Indian Statistical Institute and the National Informatics Centre attended the workshop.
Farm research
The workshop decided to suggest the establishment of two pilot open access repositories in the agricultural domain within the first year. One would be in Delhi and the other in Hyderabad . Deputy Director General of ICRISAT Dyno Keatinge said the new initiative would create a new platform for information sharing on agricultural research in the country. Vice-chairman of Indian National Knowledge Commission P. M. Bhargava said the technology and application could take agricultural information sharing into a new paradigm. The new open access agricultural information would enable farm scientists to obtain information through Internet that are more searchable.
