SINGAPORE: Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Myanmar's celebrated democracy campaigner, has told the United Nations Under-Secretary-General Ibrahim Gambari that she "welcomes the continued U.N. engagement" over the political and humanitarian issues in her country. Ms. Suu Kyi, still under house arrest as the world's best-known political prisoner, informed Mr. Gambari that she was in "good health." However, she told him that she "requires more regular visits" by the doctor for medical check-up. She was allowed by Myanmar's military junta to meet Mr. Gambari on Saturday during his visit to Yangon as the U.N. Secretary-General's special envoy. U.N. officials later said Ms. Suu Kyi expressed the "hope" that the world body's activism would help address the "many issues" that Mr. Gambari had now raised. The U.N. hinted that his concerns centred on the need for a political "opening-up" by military rulers in a "transparent" process.
