The World Diabetes Day is a reminder of how to go about avoiding lifestyle diseases

KOCHI: Film and sports personalities came together to make a health statement. Actor Kunchako Boban, playback singer Vineeth Srinivasan and cricketer S. Sreesanth called for a change in sedentary life as the first step to avoid the lifestyle diseases such as diabetes.

They participated in a programme called DiCare 2006 organised by Lakshmi Hospital on Saturday as a curtain raiser to the World Diabetes Day on November 14.

A painting competition was held for children in the morning and a mini-marathon was held in the evening. The youth icons led from the front.

The day's programme culminated in a public function, in which Vineeth said that he would like to take an oath on the occasion to exercise to keep fit.

He said that he will also try help to make it habit for his father, actor Srinivasan, who is a diabetic.

On popular demand, he also sung a few lines of the famous song "Ente khalbile... " from the film `Classmates.' Kunchacko Boban distributed the prizes to the winners of painting competitions.

Earlier, the two-kilometre mini-marathon was flagged off by K.V. Thomas, MLA, and S. Kamath, physician at Lakshmi Hospital. Tom Babu, the consultant diabetologist, spoke on the occasion.

With diabetes becoming one of the major lifestyle diseases that has affected a large chunk of population, many private hospitals have started having programmes to invite attention on the condition. The World Diabetes Day is a reminder of how to go about avoiding such a condition.

This year the International Diabetes Federation has chosen the slogan "Diabetes Care for Every One" to reach out to the disadvantaged and the vulnerable sections in the society.

The aim is to raise awareness so that every person manages to get proper guidance on the disease.
