This Day That Age
The Ceylon Premier, Mr. S.W.R.H. Bandaranaike, has opposed the suggestion that countries like India and Ceylon should withdraw from the Commonwealth as a protest against British action in Egypt. Addressing the Indian Council of World Affairs in New Delhi on November 11, he said they could not judge a democratic country lightly by the "aberrations" of a particular Government of that country at a particular moment. A large section of the British people had expressed their resentment over the British action in Suez much more vigorously than any foreign country, he said and asked, "Supposing some member leaves the Commonwealth to-day or to-morrow, as indeed it may happen, and a Labour Government is enthroned in power in Britain, has the country to go back to the Commonwealth?"
