dated November 13, 1956: Nehru condemn pacts

Addressing the AICC at Beliaghata (Calcutta) at the concluding session on November 11, Prime Minister Nehru denounced military pacts like NATO and the Warsaw Treaty as "instruments of increasing war mentality." He expressed the hope that it would be recognised that "this habit of one big country keeping its armed forces, aircraft, bases, etc. in other countries is not the way to peace and security." He hoped that all people in the West and the East "will come to the conclusion that it is no longer feasible for even great powers to impose their will on small countries by the force of arms. Something like a conscience of the world is growing in recent months, and that is a good sign."
