Village panchayat chiefs plan agitation

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: Deputy convener of the Federation of Village Panchayat Presidents of Puducherry district G.A. Jagannathan has announced that members of the federation and also councillors and ward members would lay a siege to the office of Director of Local Administration here on November 23 to protest against lack of steps to devolve financial and administrative powers to civic bodies.

Mr. Jagannathan, who is president of the Karikalambakkam village panchayat in Nettapakkam commune panchayat, said in a release on Sunday that there were repeated representations to the Chief Minister that the civic bodies be granted constitutionally recognised subjects and powers to meet the requirements of the wards. But nothing had happened so far, he said.
