`Diabetes Walk' in Madurai tomorrow

Staff Reporter

From Government Rajaji Hospital to IMA Hall

MADURAI: As the World Diabetes Day falls on November 14, several events have been planned for the day in the city to create a larger public awareness on diabetes and its complications.

Novo Nordisk, a healthcare company, is organising `Diabetes Walk' in the city involving students, diabetics, nurses, doctors and others to spread the message of both prevalence and prevention.

The walk will start from Government Rajaji Hospital and culminate at Indian Medical Association Hall. Others involved in the exercise include members of Diabetes Association of India, Madurai Walkers' Club and Joggers' Club.

A press release from Novo Nordisk here said that as per latest studies, diabetes reached an unprecedented epidemic levels with approximately 230 million people worldwide being affected by it.

Trials had proved that poor blood-sugar management leads to diabetes-related complications such as blindness, amputation, kidney failure, heart attack and nervous damage. In India, it was estimated that 31.7 million people were diagnosed with diabetes. India had the highest prevalence with the affected population expected to touch 80 million by the year 2030.

The City Police Commissioner, M. Chidambarasamy, will flag off the `Diabetes Walk' and the Dean (in-charge) of Government Rajaji Hospital, S.M. Sivakumar, among others, would address the participants.
