Two-member Central drought assessment team visits Bidar

  • Loss owing to drought and excess rainfall put at Rs. 34.5 crore

    Bidar: A two-member Central team visited Bidar on Sunday to assess the impact of drought on the district.

    Addressing presspersons here, the team members said that they would submit a report to the Union Government within a week.

    Planning Commission's agriculture wing director Daljit Singh and R.P. Reddy of the Union Rural Development Ministry visited some villages in Bidar and Humnabad taluks.

    Meeting

    Mr. Singh and Mr. Reddy spoke to farmers and held a meeting with officials.

    They also visited Mirzapur where jowar crop has been affected. The team members reviewed the progress of work on a tank for cattle at Shansheer Tanda and on another tank at Mandakanahalli. Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil told the team members that the loss incurred in the district owing to drought and excess rainfall was Rs. 34.5 crore. He said that the district received poor rainfall in June and July and excess in August.

    The State Government had released Rs. 6 crore as compensation, he added. The Deputy Commissioner said that lack of timely rainfall had affected crops, especially during the kharif season.

    Eighty per cent of black gram, soya and other crops had been damaged in the district for want of rain, Mr. Moudgil said.

    A large number of houses had collapsed in heavy rain, leading to an accumulated loss of Rs. 1 crore, the Deputy Commissioner said.

    Damaged

    Roads and bridges had been damaged in heavy rain and the loss had been put Rs. 30 crore, he said.

    Bidar Zilla Panchayat's Chief Executive Officer Jitendra Nayak, Deputy Secretary Math Mallikarjun, Joint Director of Agriculture Aman Shaikab, and officials of the Public Works Department were present.
