IGNOU to prepare database of graduate, P-G students

Staff Reporter

For designing courses which have demand in the job market

NEW DELHI: A comprehensive database of graduate and postgraduate students passing out from the universities in India is proposed to be created by Indira Gandhi National Open University to design and launch various "Value Added Tailormade Courses" which have demand in the job market, Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai announced on Sunday. The manpower requirements of the industry, service sector, national and international NGOs for development will be objectively analysed and such data will be appropriately utilised in designing and launching the courses. The entire scheme is being discussed in a two-day meeting of the Regional Directors that began on Sunday.

The help of 1,500 coordinators of Study centres and 40,000 counsellors of IGNOU will be utilised to prepare this database.

Addressing a delegation of Vice-Chancellors from various universities of Saudi Arabia who visited IGNOU to share their experiences and to engage in possible mutual collaboration, Prof. Pillai emphasised that these value-added courses shall be launched region-wise all over India catering to the needs of the students in that particular region. This database creation shall be a major activity of IGNOU so that only such courses are churned out which provide employment to Indian youth or make them successful entrepreneurs. These training courses shall equip them to place them better in employment opportunities in diverse areas, he added.

Prof. Pillai also said that it has now become essential for teachers even in conventional universities to be well versed in Information and Communication Technologies. He advocated for convergence of conventional and distance education. In this fast changing technological environment, a classroom teacher must equip himself or herself with the IT being utilised in distance education system so that he is better equipped in the present scenario.
