BELLARY: B. Sriramulu, Minister for Tourism and Textile, set in motion the pulse polio programme here on Sunday by administering two drops of the vaccine to a child. The special Pulse Polio programme was necessitated in the wake of a polio case being reported in Mumbai. The polio vaccine would be administered to children between zero and five years in about 11 districts of north Karnataka, including Bellary. Around 3.18 lakh children between zero and five years would be administered the oral polio vaccine in the district in about 1,442 booths set up for the purpose. Emphasis has been laid on covering 90 percent of the target on the first day in the booths. Children, who were not immunised in the booths, would be administered the vaccine during a door-to-door campaign under taken by health workers and volunteers between November 13 and 15. Hanumaiah, district health officer, and Abdullah, Reproduction and Child Health and Polio programme officer, were among the officials present.
