Moily favours quota for Muslims

"It should have found a place in the Constitution"

  • Says they can be brought under OBC umbrella
  • For reservation both in jobs and education

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Veerappa Moily has said that reservation for Muslims should have been part of the Constitution.

"Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, one of the founding fathers of Constitution, had favoured in the draft of the Constitution Article 296 for the benefit of minorities, especially Muslims. After the Partition, it was abandoned... It should have found a place in the Constitution," Mr. Moily, heading the Administrative Reforms Commission, said. In spite of the absence of the provision, Muslims could be put in the "mainstream" with the Other Backward Classes to get quota benefit. Mr. Moily said the backward classes were getting the benefit of reservation because they were socially and educationally backward. There were people in minority communities more backward than the OBCs, he said.— PTI
