CHENNAI : The police have arrested a software engineer on charges of torture and dowry harassment.

Police said here on Sunday that a 25-year-old woman, Mrinalini had committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in Velachery Dr Seethapathi Nagar Selvi Street five days ago. An RDO probe has been ordered.

Velachery police said the victim had locked the doors to the room and hanged herself after tying a nylon rope around her neck. Police said that Mrinalini was married to Balaji (28) only 13 months ago. As dowry, her parents had gifted 50 sovereigns of gold. The victim's father is a cashier in a nationalised bank in Nagercoil, and her mother is a teacher in a school in Madurai district, police said.

A case of torture and dowry harassment was registered against Mrinalini's husband Balaji, his mother Krishnaveni and sister Manjula. Balaji who was produced before the Saidapet court, was later remanded to custody.
