CHENNAI: In an attempt to improve the efficiency of the city police, the top brass has proposed changes in the functioning of officers and ranks. . Under the new plan, the Secretariat Security Division (SSD) police will look after the movement of VIPs. Police personnel and officers in the respective stations will not be burdened with the responsibility. After the brutal murder of a rowdy in one of the busiest points five days ago, the police raided various parts of the city and arrested over 1,000 persons during the last three days. The raids would continue, a spokesman on Saturday quoted Police Commissioner Letika Saran as saying. Giving reasons for the changes, Additional Commissioner of Police S.R. Jangid said that given the frequency of VIP visits to the city, it was decided to entrust the work to the SSD exclusively. The change would come into effect immediately. The SSD personnel would be responsible for VIP visits, including routes and functions, which were earlier looked after by the officers and men of the local police stations. This will allow the local stations to focus on their regular work, including registration of FIRs, crime scene investigation, monitoring of crime and criminals. The changes would improve the performance of the police, officers said. In many instances, members of the public complained that they were unable to contact sub-inspectors, inspectors and assistant commissioners of police and there was undue delay in attending to their petitions and grievances. From now on, there would be no complaints that the officers were not available, a senior officer said. "A responsible officer would man the station from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m." The Commissioner had stressed the need for law and order police to book rowdies in their jurisdiction behind bars.
