Listening to him play `was a great experience'

CHENNAI : Musicians, musicologists, and rasikas got together to commemorate the 42nd death anniversary of legendary violinist Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu, here on Saturday. The function was organised by Sri Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu Memorial Trust and disciples of the maestro.

"Dwaram garu brought out the true tone of the violin in each phrase and note," said renowned musician T.V.Gopalakrishnan.

"Listening to his concerts was a great learning experience for artistes like me," he added. Recalling the late artiste's magnanimity, he said "I could accompany him if I had heard him earlier. He did not expect me to prove my capacity before the concert."

Veteran musician and musicologist S.R. Janakiraman said the violinist played an important role in shaping his career.

Phrases in ragas

He sang phrases in ragas Andolika and Lalitha, to demonstrate the modulation and tones that were unique to Dwaram garu's playing style.

N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu and President of the Music Academy spoke of the violinist's mastery of the fingering technique. "I am very happy to be part of this function, organised to celebrate the genius and wizardry of Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu," he said.

He also noted that one of the veteran's earliest concerts in Chennai held in 1927 as part of an All India music conference coincided with a session of the Indian National Congress in Madras (then).

A concert by T.V.Gopalakrishnan, accompanied by S.Varadarajan on the violin, Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam on the Mridangam and T.V.Vasan on the ghatam followed.
