Shifting EB office an unwise step

The shifting of the Ambur EB Office to Reddythoppe, three kilometres away from town proper is an ill-conceived move, putting the people to hardship and costing them time and money. There is no public transport and autodrivers demand Rs.50/- to Rs.60/- for the trip.

The TNEB is requested to open the branch office in a centrally located place or make arrangements with nationalised banks near the police station to accept payment of bills from domestic consumers of electricity. This will be helpful, particularly to residents in the western side of Ambur town.

Speedy response

The whole of Karpagam Nagar, Ponniammanmedu and Madhavaram heaved a sigh of relief when in response to the news item on Page 3 (November 4, 2006), the Commissioner of the Corporation, Madhavaram (Mr. Sekar) visited the area with the Councillor on Sunday, November 5 at 11-30 a.m. and ensured the removal of the canal blocks and related works. He also assured us that a permanent canal to let the water run and four inch raising of the road would be done before the end of January 2007. In addition, he said he would see that new streetlights were installed or the existing lamps repaired.

Streetlights not working

The road lights on 1st street, Lattice Bridge Road, Indira Nagar (Division 154) are not working for the past four months. When we contacted the ADE of the division, he said that maintenance of road lights had been privatised and asked us to contact the contractor, Sabari Electricals. We contacted the contractor through cell phone (they don't have a landline) several times but they are yet to attend to the fault.

We once again contacted the ADE to inform him about the failure of the contractor to attend to the complaint.

He told us a month back that he would take up the issue with the contractor.

Now, four months have elapsed and still nothing has been done despite several phone calls to the contractor and ADE.

Remedy commuters' woes

The decision taken since October 25 by the Southern Railways to skip the stops on Thirumalpur - Chennai Beach, an EMU fast local service, at all eight stations between Chengalpattu and Tambaram during the morning peak hour has come as a thunderbolt to the commuters of this section. As a result, there is a gap of 30 to 40 minutes between services. At least 1,500 commuters have been affected by this. During the evening peak hour too, the train skips the stations in the return direction.

This decision has been taken without making any alternative arrangements to cater to the affected commuters. Prior to gauge conversion, four fast local EMU services were operated. Since the conversion three years ago, the commuter strength has almost tripled. The scheduled timings are seldom adhered to during peak hours. Even the objective of not stopping the Thirumalpur-Chennai beach fast service to reach on time is yet to be achieved.

Running substitute fast service EMUs from Chengalpattu to Chennai, with stops in all the eight stations in the Chengalpattu - Tambaram section and as fast service from Tambaram, on the main line, especially the trains CB6 and CB8, leaving Chingleput at 8-10 and 8-30 a.m. respectively, is the only remedy to reduce the travelling time. This will greatly help office goers in the mornings.

Regulate traffic, parking

There are many accidents occurring on Viswanathapuram Main Road, Kodambakkam, opp to Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam.

The main reason is the heavy traffic and unregulated parking of vehicles, particularly in a residential area.

The authorities should take action to curb the speed of vehicles and remove vehicles on either side of road. Currently, senior citizens can't step out, and children are scared to walk on the road.

Lakshmi Rangachari,

Alternate

post office

This is with reference to the item in the paper on November 6, regarding the postal facilities available at Nanganallur Post office. We would like to inform the public that there are four counters available at Nanganallur Post office, three for Saving Bank transactions and one for miscellaneous transactions viz., booking of money orders, payment of telephone bills and registered post and the Counter PAs are managing the counters and disposing of the public quickly. Hence, the allegation of the complainant about waiting at the counter for several hours is not true. Besides, an alternate site for the Nanganallur Post Office is under consideration.

The damaged manhole and the pipeline have since been rectified. There is no sewage overflow at present in the above location.

Post office needed at Keelkattalai

The residents of Arul Murugan Nagar, SRVS Colony and Sakthi Nagar are put to great difficulty by the absence of Post Office in Keelkattalai, Chennai. The letters are invariably delayed and delivered by postmen operating from Kovilambakkam and a service office in Keelkattalai. The postmen frequently absent themselves and the delivery of letters goes haywire. Telephones bills are totally lost or delivered just a day before the last day for payment. Greeting cards as a rule are generally ignored by the postmen. The VPP deliveries are not made immediately after payment. For opening a saving account, to purchase postal orders, or send money orders the residents have to go to Madipakkam or Adampakkam. We request the authorities to take immediate steps to open a post office in Keelkattalai.

Need for subways

Senior citizens, women and children find it difficult to cross major roads in Chennai City, which are one way, for example) Nungambakkam High Road, Sterling Road Junction - near Sangeetha Hotel. There are many roads declared as "one way" in the city. In the absence of proper traffic regulations on these roads, motorists seldom show consideration to the people crossing these roads. It is necessary to construct sub-ways to enable pedestrians to cross the road safely and easily. Till such time, it is necessary to provide traffic signals with "Zebra Crossings" as has been provided near Government Stanley Hospital at Ebrahimji Salai, North Chennai. The authorities should look into the problem and provide necessary facilities for safe and easy crossing of the roads, especially by elders, women and children.

Pensioners' plight

Government pensioners aged 80 years and above were in Tamil Nadu for a very long time. Some of them went to the extent of filing cases in the courts for relief and to revise the meagre pension drawn at the time of retirement. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, after observing the difficulties of these aged pensioners and the cost of living now, come forward to redress their grievances and arranged to issue a G.O. No. 579 dated 15-9-06 wherein Government servants who retired during the period from 1-6-60 to 31-5-88 get relief by revising their pension and arrears from 1-6-1988. But District Treasuries are not able to cope with the arrears claims in time due to shortage of staff in their offices. Special staff should be diverted to cope with the increased volume of work in these Treasuries. Thousands of aged pensioners will be happy if the authorities take immediate action in posting additional staff in the district Treasuries and also instruct the treasury officers to speed up the claims of arrears.

Plea to shift

wine shop

There is a TASMAC shop (No. 510) in front of the Civil Supplies Department godown complex abutting a temple. People sit around the shrine, sip drinks and munch eatables. It is not possible for devotees to frequent this temple and offer prayers. There are residential complexes around. The wine shop may be closed or shifted to another place.
