Constables `used abusive language, assaulted auto driver'

APPROACHING HIGHER OFFICIALS: Residents of Mookambikai Nagar in Tambaram coming out of the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tambaram, with whom they lodged a complaint against the behaviour of a few Tambaram police station personnel, o n Sunday.

TAMBARAM : Residents of Mookambikai Nagar in Tambaram on Sunday have formally lodged a complaint over the unseemly behaviour of a few personnel from the Tambaram police station.

In a complaint to police higher-ups, the residents have sought action against the policemen involved.

The problem began shortly after D.V.Ramamurthy of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who was re-elected as councillor of Ward No. 32 of the municipality, went around the ward on Sunday afternoon thanking residents for his re-election.

Trouble broke out between his supporters and Dakshinamurthy, a 48-year-old auto rickshaw driver, following a remark made by the latter.

A section of DMK men assaulted the driver, following which residents of the area and office-bearers of the Mookambikai Nagar (Extension) Residents Welfare Association intervened and sorted out the matter.

Residents of the area and members of the association said even as they were taking an injured Dakshinamurthy to his house, personnel from the Tambaram police station came to the spot.

The personnel switched on the public address system attached to the police jeep and began to abuse everyone present there.

"Even the women, who were in no way connected with the earlier incident were targetted," an office-bearer of the association complained. Some of the policemen also assaulted Dakshinamurthy, they said.

The councillor Mr. Ramamurthy said it was a section of the residents who caused the trouble and not his partymen. Police denied the allegations and maintained that the personnel had only asked the crowd to disperse from the spot.

They denied the use of foul language.
