CHENNAI : The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating 11 bogus insurance claims cases in Tamil Nadu on the orders of the Madras High Court, is to probe seven more cases. The seven cases have also been entrusted to the agency by the court, CBI sources said. In August this year, the CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch registered 11cases relating to bogus insurance claims, and two cases pertaining to fake FIRs. The charge sheets relating to the insurance claims had been filed by Kangeyam, Neyveli Township, Pasupathypalayam, Ramji Nagar, Manoor, Kottampatti, Bhavani, Kodumudi, Kurumbarapalli, Namakkal and Mimisal police stations. The fake FIR cases concerned the Salem Central Crime Branch and the Udumalpet police station. The sources said investigation of the 11 insurance cases revealed that the accused in all the cases had pleaded guilty before the courts and were convicted. Following the conviction, petitions had been filed before the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunals (MACT).
Claims petitions dismissed
Later, four claims petitions were "dismissed as not pressed." Original documents, which were required by the CBI for investigation purposes relating to seven cases, had been obtained from the jurisdictional judicial magistrate courts, and, in six cases, from the MACTs. Documents with regard to other cases were yet to be made available to the agency. Necessary documents had been collected from police, postal department, banks and services with regard to both the fake FIR cases and investigation was on.
360 witnesses examined
Nearly 360 witnesses had been examined in connection with the 13 cases. About 630 documents had been collected and they were being scrutinised. Twelve persons had been arrested in connection with bogus insurance claims cases. The sources said that after receiving the original documents from the magistrate courts and the MACTs, the opinion of handwriting experts had to be obtained wherever found necessary.
