CHENNAI: All the 19 international airline operators and domestic airlines have been told to step up their internal security measures, Chennai Airport Director Dinesh Kumar said here on Sunday. Talking to The Hindu , he said, following receipt of a warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States about a possible hijack threat to all U.S.-bound flights from southern India, security agencies have been put on high alert.
Re-introduced
Most of the operators have re-introduced stepladder security check as part of the intensified aviation security measures. With regard to banning entry of visitors, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will review the situation at an appropriate time. In the backdrop of the fresh warning, so far the AAI has not received any new restrictions to be imposed on the travelling public. There is also no change in the recently relaxed policy of carrying limited toiletries in liquid form in a transparent plastic bag. The AAI (custodian of terminal building) has not imposed restriction on visitors' entry so far even though there have been threats to the airport and to airline operators. Checks have been further tightened in and around all vital installations around the terminal buildings, entry and exit points in view of the high alert.
Cooperation sought
Mr. Kumar sought the cooperation of the travelling public and asked them to put up with any hardship in view of the heightened security measures. The AAI did not want to take any chance about any threat message, he added.
