CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has reiterated that farmland will not be acquired for the proposed satellite township in villages surrounding Kuthambakkam in Tiruvallur district. An official release on Sunday recalled Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's promise that farmland would not be taken over for creating special economic zones. Hence, fertile land of farmers at Kuthambakkam, Vellavedu and surrounding villages would not be acquired. The scheme had been proposed even before the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam came to power. If there had been any measure initiated by the previous government to acquire farmland, it would be stopped immediately. The assurance was in response to an appeal made by the Kuthambakkam Farmers' Welfare Association to stop the Tamil Nadu Housing Board acquiring farmland.
