KOCHI: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will implement projects to the tune of Rs.150 crore in the next three years to provide quality electricity to the city, says a press release issued by it. Steps are being taken to revive the 16-mw, 61.5-million unit Bhootathankettu mini-hydel project. Steps are also afoot to boost the prospects of the 157-mw Reliance Energy scheme which uses naphtha and LSHS and the 106-mw Brahmapuram diesel plant, once LNG is made available. The Special Economic Zone at Puthu Vype and the container transhipment terminal at Vallarpadam will require power sub-stations. As of now, Ernakulam has two 220-kV, 15 110-kV, 18 66-kV, and six 33-kV sub-stations. Two 66-kV gas-insulated sub-stations will be commissioned soon at Marine Drive and Fort Kochi at a cost of Rs.12 crore. Steps are being taken to set up a 110-kV sub-station at New Vytilla and 33-kV sub-stations at Alangad, Vengola, Koovappady, Kaloorkad and Varapuzha at a total cost of Rs.20 crore. Investment to the tune of Rs.50 crore has been proposed for power transmission projects in Ernakulam till 2007. A 400-kV sub-station will be built at Pallikkara as part of the power-highway project. Of the Rs.243-crore works scheduled in Kochi city and the suburbs under the Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme (APDRP), works to the tune of Rs.70 crore are complete. Tenders have been invited for Rs.100-crore works to streamline power supply using updated technology. The KSEB aims to make available electricity connections in 74 villages in Ernakulam and a Rs.21.37-crore project has been submitted for Central sanction. 21,000 new power connections have been given in Ernakulam since the LDF Government came to power. The pending 18,092 applicants will be given connection this financial year. As many as 40 transformers have been installed this financial year. Meters have been fitted in many transformers as part of energy audit. The KSEB aims to make Kochi a complaints-free zone for electricity consumers.
