Puducherry : The Bharathidasan Government College for Women (an autonomous Arts and Science College) will introduce the choice-based credit system soon. The governing body meeting of the college held here recently under the Education Secretary B.V. Selvaraj finalised recommendations to improve the quality of education in the 38-year-old institution and to design the curriculum for various courses available. The Choice Based Credit system would provide opportunity for the students to have flexibility to choose the subjects under elective stream offered by other departments. This would facilitate the college to have inter-disciplinary approach. The main subject and the elective subjects would be different and the choice based credit system would enable the students to have flexibility in choosing subjects and gain credits. (The Women's college affiliated to Pondicherry University was conferred autonomous status during 2004-2005 academic year). Among those, who participated in the deliberations, included former Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University A. Gnanam, former Vice-Chancellor of Madras University Rev. Fr. Ignacy Muthu, principal of Smt. Indira Gandhi College Tiruchirapalli K. Meena, Dean of the School of Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences of Pondicherry University S. Balakrishnan, Kalaimamani Mannar Mannan, Goa University professor V. Shivakumar, Director of Collegiate and Technical Education Jayanta Kumar Ray, Controller of Examinations R. Balakrishnan as well as the Principal of the Women's college S. Kumudha. A release from the college said on Monday that the institution would also increase the number of elective subjects and ancillary courses to to provide students better job opportunities. The college would also ink a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with other reputed institutions for synergising and strengthening the courses.
Recommendations
The other recommendations of the governing body: introduction of new diploma and certificate courses as per demand of the employers and entrepreneurs, programmes to establish `industry-institution' linkage, setting up Entrepreneur Development Cell and establishment of a `Watch Camp' to analyse results in examinations and to recommend new methodology of teaching and learning systems, the release further added.
