Court calls for records

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has called for records relating to the election of the Nagapattinam Municipal Chairman. The election was held on October 28.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru passed the orders, and issued notices to the State Election Commissioner and the District Collector, on a public interest litigation petition filed by P. Arivazhagan, a newly elected councillor.

The petitioner alleged that the Municipal Commissioner himself had cast votes of 21 councillors, after compelling them into giving letters stating that they all had low vision and that they could not read or write. The municipality has 36 councillors. While the AIADMK has 14 councillors, 13 were won by the DMK, the petitioner submitted. The Bench posted the matter to December 4 for further proceedings. — Special Correspondent
