Sports : General
In the death of Polly Umrigar we have lost a true sportsman of all times. I ran into him when I was just 16 trying to edit a handwritten and hand-circulated magazine on cricket. Would you believe it? He spent half-an-hour with me at Hotel Oceanic in Santhome and responded to all my dumb questions with striking courtesy. The last I saw him was when he was driving on Marine Drive a year ago. I can never forget both the occasions. He was utterly fair to everyone around him, on and off the ground. There was everything in him that modern cricketers need to emulate. We would do well to perpetuate his memory. R.K. Raghavan, Chennai A sheet anchor In the passing away of Polly Umrigar an era has ended. An affable person, I had met him twice at the Corporation stadium during the 1962 England v India Test match. He used to be a sheet anchor of many an Indian side like his senior Vijay Hazare. His batting was a treat to watch. P.R. Krishna Narayanan, Kochi A no-contest The ICC Champions Trophy final proved to be a no-contest in the end. The West Indies batting could not sustain its good showing and Australia romped home easily. Congratulations to Australia. S. Ramakrishnasayee, Ranipet Brazen behaviour The editorial in The Hindu (Nov. 9), `Champion's behavioural slide' has exquisitely analysed the brazen behaviour of the Australia captain and another player at the Champions Trophy prize distribution function. Cricketers on tour must remember that they are their country's unofficial ambassadors. S. Venkatachalam Coimbatore
