ELEGANT: Sunita Menon
NEW DELHI: Bringing the art of dance to a temple, accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer Sunita Menon will be performing during the prestigious 41-day Mandala Pooja celebrations due to start at Shree Ayyappa Temple in Ramakrishnapuram here from November 17. The Delhi-based dancer's skilful footwork and delicate movements speak volumes about the hard work that has gone into attaining excellence in Bharatanatyam. Her single-minded pursuit began at the age of seven and she has carved out a niche for herself. A double diploma holder in Bharatanatyam in Pandallur and Kalakshetra styles, Sunita perfected the art form by joining Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi in 1998 under the tutelage of Justin McCarthy and went on to complete her postgraduate diploma in Kalakshetra Style with highest marks. She was introduced to the art by Sujata Dinesh at Rukmini Devi Lalit Kala Kendra in Pitampura here. Her solo and group performances in schools won prizes at the district and state levels. She has danced the lead female role in virtually all dance-drama productions by Justin McCarthy. She played Andal in "Mystic Bride", Shakuntala in "Abhigyanashakuntalam" and most recently the pivotal role of the Devadasi in "Kshetrayya" premiered this spring. These are all Sunita's most memorable performances.
