BANGALORE: The Government on Sunday lifted the ban on recruitment for teaching posts in private aided colleges in the State. The ban was imposed by the S.M. Krishna Government. This followed the restructuring of the Education Department. Pre-university colleges were bifurcated from the first grade colleges and the economy drive had compelled the Government to go in for the ban. Addressing presspersons here, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said the Government Order allowed managements of private aided degree colleges to fill nearly 3,500 vacant posts. In some aided colleges, there were only two or three permanent teaching staff while in some other colleges the post of principal was held by temporary staff, he said. The appointment of the approved 3,500 teaching posts would cost Rs. 60 crore a year to the State exchequer. Managements of private aided colleges themselves could recruit the candidates having qualifications as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. One employee of the Department of Collegiate of Education will be member of the recruitment panel in colleges, the Minister said. The Government was committed to opening degree college in taluk headquarters where there was not even one now. Asked about BJP's stance on the Datta Jayanthi celebrations at Bababudanagiri in Chikmagalur, Mr. Shankaramurthy said the party would support the celebrations, which would be held on December 4, the day on which polling will take place for the byelection to the Chamundeshwari Assembly seat. The party would clear all apprehensions about the Datta Jayanthi celebrations and law and order would be maintained, he added.
