Hockey
NEW DELHI: Satish Kumar struck the match-winner in the nick of time, a sharp but gentle tap over a prone goalkeeper, Ejius Minz, to help Guru Harkrishan Public School, Punjabi Bagh, to a 3-2 victory over Town High School, Sundergarh, in the final of the 35th Nehru junior hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Monday. In a contest that came alive in the second half after the teams were locked 1-1 at halftime, it was the athleticism and power play that carried the day for the Delhi team. The Orissa team opened the account in the sixth minute as Jagdish Soreng pushed home following an abortive attempt by Mangal Kispotta. The Delhi team responded with the equaliser in the next minute, as Laxmi Shankar Yadav scooped it in after skipper Sajjan Singh's attempt, off the team's first penalty corner, was thwarted by the defence.
Penalty corners galore
A string of penalty corners failed to fructify into goals on either side, and it was Sajjan Singh who struck a telling blow by converting the Delhi team's sixth penalty corner in the 26th minute of the second half, with a powerful drag that brushed the crosspiece while nestling into the cage. Three minutes from the hooter, the Orissa team clinched the equaliser, as Deepak Kullu sounded the board off a rebound. With time ticking away on a wintry evening, Satish Kumar brought the curtain down on the contest with a decisive blow, thinking on his heel and executing with admirable poise and precision. The champion side collected Rs. 96,000 and the coach of the winning team, N.U. Ansari, was presented Rs. 8,000. The runner-up collected Rs. 64,000 and the coach of that team was awarded Rs. 5,000. The third placed team got Rs. 32,000 and its coach Jasbir Singh Bajwa was presented Rs. 3,000. The Pepsi penalty corner award of Rs. 20,000 was bagged by Bangladesh Institute of Sports while the promising team award of Rs. 25,000 went to Sat Guru Partap Singh Academy, Sri Bhaini Sahib. The results: final: Guru Harkrishan Public School, Punjabi Bagh, 3 (Laxmi Shankar Yadav, Sajjan Singh, Satish Kumar) bt Town High School, Sundergarh 2 (Jagdish Soreng, Deepak Kullu). Third place: Government Model High School, Chandigarh, 4 (Shyam Bir (2), Palwinder Singh and Mukesh Kumar Dagar) bt Union Academy Senior Secondary School 2 (Deepak Kumar, Dharamvir Singh).
