MPs urged to raise oil refinery issue

Special Correspondent

Delay would affect development of western Rajasthan

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Mines and Petroleum Minister Laxminarain Dave on Monday called upon all Members of Parliament elected from the State, cutting across party lines, to help out in establishment of an oil refinery in Barmer, where huge oil reserves have been found, to facilitate commercial production of crude oil.

Mr. Dave, in a letter addressed to MPs, requested them to raise the issue effectively in Parliament and apprise the Prime Minister and the Union Petroleum Minister of bottlenecks in the setting up of refinery. He said the delay in execution of the refinery project would affect economic development of western Rajasthan.

The Minister pointed out that the Centre had selected Oil and Natural Gas Corporation to establish a refinery of 7.5 MMTPA capacity and purchase oil to be produced by Cairn Energy.
