BHOPAL: One person was killed in police firing on a rampaging mob that encircled the Harai police station in Chhindwara district on Sunday afternoon after a tribal had been crushed to death by a liquor contractor's jeep in a nearby village. Senior officials were camping at Harai on Monday and the situation was said to be under control. According to information received here, a mob of tribals attacked the police station after Harai Janapad Panchayat member Bir Singh was run over by a liquor contractor's jeep in Basuria Khurd village 8 km from the police station. It is learnt that the liquor contractor's men were surrounded by villagers when they went to Basuria on a "mission" to nab the villagers involved in production and sale of illicit country liquor. When they were trying to escape, Bir Singh was crushed to death and another villager was injured. Following this incident, angry villagers converged at the Harai police station and pelted stones. They also allegedly set on fire some vehicles parked within the premises. To disperse the mob, the police opened fire killing a tribal.
