CHENNAI: A hospital protocol for response during emergency and disaster, put together by a pool of doctors, was submitted to Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin here on Monday. It provides for comprehensive disaster management in a situation where more than 50 injured persons have to be treated. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, head, department of orthopaedic surgery, Government General Hospital, said it was the first of its kind in the State.
"Health service
not consulted"
Though the State and Central Governments had formed disaster management teams, the health service was not being consulted, Dr. Mayilvahanan said. In the West, all major hospitals and organisations had a disaster management plan. A working plan for the State would take help to more number of people in times of crisis. Mr. Stalin appreciated the doctors' effort to involve the medical sector in rescue efforts. In the last 10 years, Tamil Nadu had faced floods, earthquakes and road and rail accidents that left many dead and injured. Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said though disasters could not be predicted, it was necessary to be prepared to tackle an emergency. Not only the heads of government institutions but also all medical personnel and equipment should be pressed into service during a crisis. Director of Medial Education P. Vijayalakshmi and MMC Dean Kalavathi Ponniraivan spoke.
