CHENNAI: About 20 students and their teachers from Bowen School, Singapore, will spend the next two weeks in the city.

The managements of Alpha Matriculation and Bowen Schools signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Singapore last year for a three-year student and faculty exchange programme, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Singapore.

Though students of Alpha Matriculation School have visited Singapore earlier, the visit of the Bowen team marks the first visit after the agreement was signed.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, representatives of the two schools shared their perspectives on the programme. Mathematics teachers at Alpha would introduce the concept of Vedic Mathematics.

As part of the Biology project, the visiting students will learn about the medicinal properties of neem. When the students from Alpha visit Singapore next year, they will do a project on orchids, the national flower of Singapore, known for its medicinal value.

Ng Wah Kian, mathematics and science faculty member, and Goh. Buan Chuan Dominic, head, Mathematics Department, Bowen School, said such projects added value to education. The project included visits to Kalakshetra, Dakshina Chithra and Pondicherry to give the students a `cultural feel'.

The students were selected based on their aptitudes and grades. The team had six students of Indian origin but all of them were in India for the first time.

Grace George, chairperson and correspondent of Alpha School, said such programmes facilitated interaction between students and gave them a global perspective.
