CHENNAI : Even as the intensity of rainfall in and around Chennai appears to be declining, water managers are taking steps for conserving water to the extent possible. The authorities are maintaining the level in the Satyamurti Sagar in Poondi by releasing all the inflow of 90 cubic feet per second (cusecs) to the Cholavaram tank through the "baby canal." On Monday morning, the level of the Poondi reservoir stood at 137.21 ft (full level: 140 ft). Cholavaram's level stood at 61.61 ft (64.5 ft). In the case of Red Hills, the level was 44.94 ft (50.20 ft). Red Hills, which recorded 7 cm rainfall, received an inflow of 555 cusecs. The discharge was 150 cusecs. Poondi and Cholavaram registered 1 cm and 3 cm The combined storage of the three storage points was 5.181 thousand million cubic feet against the capacity of 7.412 tmcft. On the same day last year, the combined storage was 5.658 tmcft. In respect of the Chembarampakkam tank (which supplements the city supply), the level was 79.95 ft (85.4 ft). The storage was 2.259 tmcft against the capacity of 3.645 tmcft. On the corresponding day last year, it was 2.753 tmcft. The tank recorded 2 cm rain. Tamaraiapakkam and Zamin Koattur, catchment areas of the city supply, recorded 3 cm rain each.
