BANGALORE: "I am looking forward to a social change where people will not only refuse to pay bribe but also speak in a united voice against corruption. This will be an effective deterrent against corruption, said Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde.

He was speaking at a round table discussion on "Role of Lokayukta in good governance" organised here on Monday by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce.

Lack of effective steps to tackle corruption in the 1950s had led it to grow to menacing levels. It would be difficult for the present generation to reduce or prevent corruption, he said.

There was need to create awareness on corruption among children and instil in them the value of money. College students should know about the damage that corruption would cause to society, he said. Deputy Chairman of Karnataka State Planning Board A. Ravindra said public organisations such as FKCCI needed to explore the methodology by which collective work could be done in tackling corruption. The Government always feared public opinion. The media too played an important part in tackling corruption, he added. Mr. Ravindra said that there were mechanisms within the Government for providing good governance. Mr. Hegde voiced concern over the bad state of the road network in Mangalore. "I am surprised that the elite class of the city, which fought for the infrastructure in 1950s, was sitting quiet. I will send a report on the poor state of roads to the Government."
