Two arrested for criminal cases

NEW DELHI: Two young men wanted by the police in 33 criminal cases have been arrested by the Crime Branch. The two were alleged to be behind the murder of the Aligarh Vyapar Mandal president in Uttar Pradesh last May. The incident had triggered off a communal riot there.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Neeraj Thakur on Monday said a Special Team received a tip-off on Sunday that two persons, Uwesh and Naved, who were suspected to be involved in the kidnapping of a doctor for ransom, would pass by Delhi University's North Campus.

The police laid a trap and intercepted a Maruti Esteem car in which the suspects were moving. The accused allegedly fired two rounds at the police but were overpowered. A 9 mm pistol of Italy make, a country-made firearm and live cartridges were allegedly recovered from their possession. The vehicle was found stolen from Rohini in North-West Delhi. The police alleged that the accused had murdered Om Prakash, the president of Vyapar Mandal in Aligarh, who was also a Bharatiya Janata Party leader. His murder had led to riots in the area resulting in the death of at least two persons.

AIDS intervention programme

NEW DELHI: The North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) on Monday announced launch of a comprehensive HIV/AIDS intervention programme for its employees at workplaces located across the city. NDPL has joined hands with the Delhi State AIDS Control Society (DSACS) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for the programme.

The DSACS would undertake intervention aspects such as education and training for one year for NDPL employees to sensitise them about HIV/AIDS. The organisation has also roped in an NGO, Society for All Round Development, for conducting a Knowledge Attitude Behaviour Practices (KABP) survey on NDPL employees prior to the training programme.

NDPL Managing director Anil Kumar Sardana said any ethical organisation that values its employees must work towards sustaining and improving the quality of their life. "This sensitisation programme is a reflection of our commitment towards our employees. It will also equip our employees with valuable knowledge and encourage them to pass it forward and share it with others in their area of work," he added.
