CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies have won a majority of posts of chairman and vice-chairman in the indirect elections held on Monday. The elections were to be held on October 28, but were postponed for various reasons. Candidates of the DMK and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were elected chairmen in 10 of the 13 town panchayats, with the DMK bagging nine posts. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won in one town panchayat, while Independents bagged two town panchayats. The DMK nominee also won the chairmanship in a third grade municipality. For the vice-chairman posts, the DMK won in 9 outs of 23 town panchayats and two out of three municipalities. The Congress and the CPI (M) won one each in the third grade municipality. The Pattali Makkal Katchi bagged the vice-chairman post in one town panchayat. The AIADMK bagged the vice-chairman post in three town panchayats, while the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party won one each. Independents were elected to the vice-chairman posts in four town panchayats and in one third grade municipality. Elections to the post of chairman of the Sivaganga municipality, four town panchayats and one municipality were postponed, according to an Election Commission release.
