KOCHI: Akashavani, Thiruvananthapuram, has launched a weekly programme on the coir industry, its prospects and future in collaboration with the Coir Board to mark the 50th year of Kerala formation. A.C. Jose, Coir Board Chairman, said this was the first time that a comprehensive programme was being launched on the coir industry on radio. He also appealed to listeners to send in their reactions to the programme, being aired on Wednesdays at 6.50 p.m. The inaugural edition of the programme on November 8 gave an overview of the coir industry's tradition and the aim of the programme. This Wednesday, the programme will deal with the problems dogging the industry. The topics being covered on subsequent Wednesdays are: employment opportunities in the coir sector and coir industry on the growth path on November 22; a special programme comprising panellists on the past, present and future of coir industry on November 29. This will be followed by a broadcast on export prospects for the coir industry. There will be question-answer session will be aired on December 6 as well as a documentary on the Coir Research Institute at Kalavoor, Alappuzha. The need for capturing the domestic market will be emphasised in the programme to be aired on December 13. This will be followed by a programme on eco-friendly products from coir. The need for diversification to revive the coir industry will be dealt in the programme to be aired on December 20. This will be followed by a programme on mechanised looms. On December 27, the programme will be on the utilisation of coconut husks and the uses of coir pith. A question-answer session will be aired on January 3.
