Of merger and gaffes

The DIC(K)-NCP merger was a show of strength in Kochi last Sunday. The large number of people that thronged the Marine Drive grounds surprised even the organisers. Though no rally was taken out, the convention spoiled the holiday mood and city traffic was thrown out of gear on a Sunday evening. Since city buses were re-routed, hundreds of commuters were stranded.

The convention was not without its usual quota of gaffes. D.P. Tripathi, NCP general secretary in charge of Kerala, quoted a couplet in Malayalam: "Chora Thudikkum Cheru Kaiyukale, Peruka Vannee Panthangal" but wrongly attributed it to Kumaran Asan instead of Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon.
