VIZIANAGARAM: Janasri Bhima Yojana, an insurance scheme introduced for the welfare of rickshaw-pullers, autorickshaw drivers and pushcart vendors by the TDP Government, has been stopped, M. Srinivasa, CITU district general secretary, has said. At a press conference on Tuesday, Mr. Srinivasa said that the Congress Government stopped renewal of the annual scheme since last year for these unorgansied workers. The government had to pay Rs.100 as premium once in a year for each worker. The CITU, which had during its jeep jatha in October come to know of the problems of workers in organised and unorganised sectors, decided to launch an agitation in phases as the Chief Minister, who was submitted a memorandum at the end of jatha, had not taken steps to address the problems mentioned in the memorandum. He demanded a comprehensive legislation for mutha, auto, rickshaw, construction and other workers in the unorganised sector besides establishing a welfare board in line with the one existing in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Kerala for the workers. He said that the employees working in automobile showrooms, petrol bunks, bars and restaurants, chit funds, computer kiosks, etc. had not been getting wages as per the Minimum Wages Act.
