Kakinada: In a novel initiative marking Children's Day on Tuesday, East Godavari Collector M. Subrahmanyam provided an opportunity to inmates of social welfare hostels to interact with him. He arranged breakfast for the students at his bungalow and spent quite some time with them making personal enquiries.
Owes it to teacher
The Collector answered questions posed by Satish Kumar, a student from G. Mamidada. The questions related to the Collector's childhood, schooling and temperament. Mr. Subrahmanyam was frank in confessing that he was not regular to school and that he was forced to study. "I, however, developed interest in studies and came out meritoriously because of the encouragement given by one of my teachers Ramana Murthy," he said.
Humble background
Stating that he came from a poor family, he attributed the position he held now to sheer hard work and commitment. He told students that many a people occupying higher positions now hailed from rural areas and poor families.
Discipline matters
He also advised them to cultivate discipline, study with determination and draw inspiration from people like President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Prasanthi Kumari, a 10th class student, said she was interested in becoming a singer. She also sang a song depicting the plight of youth who fall prey to AIDS and urging them to keep away from the dreaded disease.
Song with message
Impressed by the message in the song, the Collector asked the District Medical and Health Officer to get it recorded as audiocassettes and Compact Disks for use in the AIDS awareness campaign. Joint Collector C. Sudarsan Reddy, Assistant Collector Ilambarty, DEO Parvati, DRDA Project Director Ch. Kumara Swamy and Social Welfare Deputy Director Ramana Murthy were among those who attended the programme.
