`Bala Mitra Mandali' proves to be instant hit with children

LIVE ROUND: Children having a look at the arms on display at the police station in Rajahmundry on Tuesday.

Rajahmundry: Gone are the days when children feared policemen. Thanks to change in their outlook, the little ones see in the `men in khaki' a friend and a dependable guide.

True to this perception, the city police celebrated Children's Day in a unique way. Circle Inspector Raghuveera Reddy and SIs - Gows Baig and Balakishan - arranged `Police Bala Mitra Mandali'. Children from different municipal schools were special invitees on the occasion.

Around 9 a.m., the little guests gathered at the One-Town police station. Mr. Gows Baig, in his address, welcomed them and explained about the hierarchy in the department, their respective duties and responsibilities.

"What is the difference between a white dress and a khaki dress sir?" questioned Subhashini from J.B. Municipal School. The SI explained the difference between traffic and civil police. They were even shown the cell where accused persons were kept temporarily after their arrest.

Later, staff members took the children to the front portion of the station where different arms were displayed. Mr. Baig and the head constable of the station explained how arms like SLR, double barrel gun and other pistols work.

"It's thrilling"

"We saw such huge guns for the first time. It is really a thrilling experience to move close with police officials in a station," said Manasa, Lahari and Vikki of Class 7 from Netaji School.

Children were also offered chocolates, juices and biscuits.
