dated November 15, 1956: Next general elections

The Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Sukumar Sen, said in New Delhi on November 13 that he was working for the target of getting ready for holding the general elections in the first half of February 1957. Mr. Sen was addressing a conference of representatives of the four all-India political parties - the Congress, the Praja Socialist Party, the Jan Sangh and the Communist Party - convened by him to discuss matters relating to the next general elections. The conference was attended by Mr. K.P. Madhavan Nair and Mr. Shriman Narayan (Congress), Mr. T.N. Singh and Mr. H.V. Kamath (PSP), Mr. U.M. Trivedi and Prof. Balraj Madhok (Jan Sangh) and Mr. P.C. Joshi and Mr. M.N. Govindan Nair (Communist Party). The consensus was in favour of the elections some time between the second half of February and the first half of March.
