TNCC chief pays homage to Nehru

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president M.Krishnasswamy on Tuesday paid floral tributes to the portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru on his 118th birth anniversary at Sathyamurthy Bhavan.

Several other party functionaries including Congress Legislature Party leader D.Sudarsanam also garlanded Nehru's portrait. Mr.Krishnaswamy paid homage to Jawaharlal Nehru after garlanding his statue in Guindy, a TNCC release said. — Special Correspondent

Set up panel to repair cracks in temple: PIL

MADURAI: A public interest litigation petition has been filed before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court seeking for a direction to constitute an expert committee for repairing the cracks developed in a few structures at Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here. A Division Bench comprising Justices D. Murugesan and P. Murgesen ordered notice to the HR&CE Department and the Board of Trustees returnable by November 22. The petitioner, S. Muthu Kumar, an advocate here, said the committee should comprise of eminent architects, engineers, `Stapathis' and members of Archaeological Survey of India. — Staff Reporter

Uniform syllabus panel meeting

COIMBATORE: The committee formed by the State Government to implement a uniform syllabus for standards I to X will visit Coimbatore on November 18. The committee has been visiting various cities to get the views of the public regarding this proposal. The committee has invited academics, principals, correspondents, teachers, parents, students and the public to attend and give their views. The meeting will be held at C.S.I Boys High School here around 10 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Officials seize Rs. 14 lakh at airport

CHENNAI: Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Chennai Airport Customs on Monday seized Indian currency amounting to Rs.14 lakh from a Singapore-bound passenger Manivannan.

According to C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, Chennai Airport, the officials intercepted him after he had completed check-in formalities. Initially, he did not declare any currency to the authorities but said he was carrying some machinery parts for repairs. After questioning, the passenger admitted he was carrying only Rs.4 lakh Indian currency. On detailed examination of his baggage, the passenger was found to carry Rs.9 lakh and Rs.5 lakh. He was arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is on.

Court dismisses John Pandian's plea

DINDIGUL: The Principal Sessions Court here on Tuesday dismissed an appeal petition filed by

Thamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam founder John Pandian, in a case relating to assault of police and confirmed the decree of Judicial Magistrate Court which sentenced him to 27-month imprisonment.

The prosecution said Dindigul town north police had registered a case against him on charges of assaulting the escort police when they produced him before the court here for hearing of public property damage case some months ago. — Staff Reporter
