ALL SET: Schoolchildren, who were once child workers, getting ready to perform a folk dance during a Children's Day function in Bijapur on Tuesday.
BIJAPUR: It was a special day for Renuka, Bindu, Bebi, Shehnaz, Basu Rathod, Kumar, Anil Savalagi and their friends who welcomed VIPs to a Children's Day programme here on Tuesday. Over 500 children, who were child labourers not long ago but have now been admitted to different schools, participated in the programme organised at Bal Bhavan by the departments of Women and Child Welfare, Public Instructions, and Library. Besides showcasing handicraft items made by them, they put up a variety of art and cultural events. Some of them enacted the roles of personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Chennamma, Onake Obavva and Shishunala Sharief. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin said parents should see that their wards were engaged in extracurricular activities needed for overall personality development. Zilla panchayat president Arjun Rathod said books on children's literature would be made available in nearly 100 libraries under the department this year. Kanchyani Sharanappa, who has to his credit several works on children literature, said anomalies in the Department of Library in selecting books would be set right. Zilla panchayat vice-president Shivanagouda Patil; zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Rajive Ranjan; and National Youth Award winner Javed Jamadarparticipated in the programme.
