S. Nadarajan
Puducherry: The AICC general secretary, B.K. Hariprasad MP, held discussions with the legislators, office bearers and representatives of the students, youth and mahila wings of the Congress during his brief visit to Puducherry on Tuesday. He told The Hindu later that some of the meetings were one to one parleys with the functionaries and legislators to take stock the party's functions and the working of the Government. Mr. Hariprasad, who is an observer of the high command to look after affairs of the Congress here, said that he had also spoken to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam convener R.V. Janakiraman and said that it was only a courtesy meeting. Delegates of the Communist party of India (CPI) held discussions with him before he left here for Chennai. He said he would present a report and apprise the high command and AICC leader of his impression gained through his visit to Puducherry. He, however, stated that he was convinced that the government functioned smoothly under the leadership of N. Rangasamy. "Certain important matters" that had cropped up recently were also discussed and the views of the party functionaries and also the PCC leader P Shanmugham were gathered. Mr. P. Shanmugham briefed the visiting AICC delegate on various aspects of development of the party. Asked whether the discussion with the party functionaries covered the issue of finalising the names for the posts of three nominated legislators and chairmen for various statutory bodies, Mr. Hariprasad said these issues also were raised during the talks. He hinted that of the three nominated MLA posts, the Congress, Pattali Makkal Katchi and Communist party of India would get one seat each. He said that his visit did not bear any unusual significance and he had come after a gap of nearly six months since the Assembly polls held in May.
