Feel of firearms on Children's Day!

Festivities, contests mark the day all over the State



NEW EXPERIENCE: Kadapa SP Y. Nagi Reddy explaining the functioning of AK 47 rifle to students at the Police Parade Grounds in Kadapa on Tuesday.

KADAPA: School students got an opportunity to see firearms, hand grenades and other armaments used by the police when they watched a display of over a dozen sophisticated weapons at Police Parade Grounds on Children's Day on Tuesday.

Led by their teachers, students watched with enthusiasm AK-47, .303 and .22 rifles, Insas 5.56 mm rifle, SLR 7.62, 9 mm. carbine, 410 musket, 9 mm. pistol, VL pistol, riot gun, gas gun, light machine gun, grenade, tear gas shell etc.

Kadapa Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy, Armed Reserve DSP K. Sekhar, reserve inspectors and reserve sub-inspectors explained to the students about the firearms and the situations in which they are used.

Very Light (VL) rifle was fired to show the manner in which the police gave signal to a helicopter to land at a specified spot.

Cultural programmes

In Tirupati, the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was observed in the form of competitions and cultural programmes by various institutions on Tuesday. The Tirupati Film Society, in association with TTD, observed the day at Mahati Auditorium with cultural programmes by schoolchildren.

TTD's Dharma Prachara Parishat conducted a music programme, where 20 students of Shrutilaya School of Music gave a classical concert. A week-long programme by Regional Science Centre commemorating the event started on Tuesday. Competitions for children will be conducted on its premises daily. Students can register at 228 6202.

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) conducted essay writing competitions for children.

`Play and learn'

Minister for Lift Irrigation M. Mareppa addressed a function in connection with Children' Day function in Kurnool.

He said education should be imparted in playful mood and cut-throat competition should not figure in the scheme of things.

He said though private schools focused on better infrastructure for academics, playgrounds and other extra-curricular activities were neglected.

The Minister along with MLA M.A. Gafoor and Collector M. Dana Kishore launched the celebrations by releasing balloons into the sky.

Also, they released posters on children's rights.

Tributes to Nehru

In Chittoor, ZP chief executive officer Veerabhadraiah paid rich tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He asked the children to read biographies of national leaders and imbibe their ideals and ideologies.

District Educational Officer Hymavathi exhorted the students to be disciplined in their studies.

ICDS project director Chandrakala participated.
