HYDERABAD: Moulana Azad High School won the third, annual inter-schools hockey tournament for V. Purushotham memorial trophy defeating Mamatha High School 2-1 in the final at Gymkhana Grounds here on Tuesday. Subhan Bin Osman's brace was the crucial factor which helped MAHS to win the trophy. He scored in the sixth and 42nd minutes. For Mamatha HS it was Sridhar who reduced the margin in the 44th minute.
Chaitanya Krishna shines
Y. Chaitanya Krishna (93) helped St. Andrews High School to score a 164-run win against Ivy League Academy in the inter-schools (under-13) cricket tournament here. The scores: Inter-schools (under-13): St. Andrews 271 for five (Y. Chaitanya Krishna 93, D. Sresht 39) bt Ivy League Academy 107 (Surya Kiran 44). Johnson Grammar School 145 (Arun 40, Balagi three for 27) bt HPS Begumpet 134 ( Naresh 31 not out, Vignesh four for 36, Srinath three for 10). A-Division league: ECIL 226 for six (Nabeel 68) bt Greenturf 116 (Ratna Shekar five for 19). A-Division (one-day) knock-out: PKMCC 146 (Samee Ansari six for 27) lost to Vijay Hanuman 147 for nine (Shoukath Ali Khan 52 not out, C.J. Karthik four for 27).
Seshu keeps lead
P.V.V. Seshu continued to lead with seven points after outwitting V. Jagadish in the eighth round of the 14th annual YMCA Tatipalli Gopalakrishna prize money chess tournament here. The results (eighth round): P.V.V. Seshu (7) bt V. Jagadish (6); C.H. Raj Kumar (6.5) bt V. Bhavana (6); S. Subba Raju (5) lost to P. Srinivasa Rao (6.5); K. Ravi (5) lost to M. Tennis workshop
The Advantage Tennis Academy in coordination with National High Performance Academy (Sydney) will organise a tennis workshop in Hyderabad from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1 at Fateh Maidan Tennis Complex according to a press release. The event will be supervised by the three-member team of Mark Wilton, Ryan Henry and Joe Kubizniak from Australia. "From my experience over the years, I have seen a lot of talented players from India. This great talent needs to be guided into a structured programme that covers all areas, especially self-discipline," said Mark Wilton, commercial manager of NHPS (Sydney). "Players are put through their paces in a number of areas, including tactical and technical drills simulating match play. We're excited to be showcasing the NHPA Sydney programme and we feel it will greatly benefit the local tennis community. If given the chance to be in a structured environment and be given an opportunity to train at consistently high levels, I feel that Indian players could be the next Asian powerhouse on the world tennis tours," said Ryan Henry, NHPA (Sydney) coach.
Open rapid chess
The Magna Chess Academy will organise Open rapid prize money chess tournament on November 19 at Magna Chambers (Abids). It will also organise under-9 and 13 age group tournaments on the same day. Further details can be had on Phone No: 9346367012.
Carrom officials
B.K. Haranath, president of Hyderabad Carrom Association, has been nominated as chairman of International Technical Commission, and S. Madanraj, secretary of HCA, convenor of the boarding committee for the ensuing World Cup carrom championship to be held in Delhi from November 17 to 21. It is also informed that D.J.N. Sarma and M.V.L. Narasimha Rao, international referees from Hyderabad, would officiate in the above event.
SAI admission
The Sports Authority of India (STC, Saroornagar) invites applications for admission to the hostel for the year 2006-07 in kabaddi (boys only) on November 18 ad 19 at the venue. Candidates should be in the age group of 14 and 18 years and medal winners at State/National/districts/schools/rural meets. Those interested may report to Assistant Director at the venue with original date of birth certificates and three passport photographs.
