13 killed in bus accident

SHIMLA: Thirteen people were killed and 41 injured when a private bus met with an accident at Talada, 38 km from Kullu, on Tuesday morning. The bus was heavily overloaded and was going from Aut to Sanj in the interior of Kullu district when the mishap took place.

Twenty-one of the seriously injured have been sent to hospitals in Kullu, Shimla and Chandigarh. Among the passengers were schoolchildren and labourers, according to the police. The driver of the bus lost the control on a curve and it fell more than 300 ft into a steep gorge.

H.P. Marketing Board Chairman Satya Prakash Thakur and Khimi Ram, MLA, along with district officials and doctors rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operations. Kullu Deputy Commissioner Chamel Singh released an immediate relief of Rs. 5,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased and those referred to hospitals for treatment.

State Governor V.S. Kokje and Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh have expressed grief over the accident and directed the district administration to provide immediate relief to the affected families.
