State SC/ST corporation to be split

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to split the Karnataka Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation into two.

Minister for Social Welfare Balachandra Jarakiholi told presspersons here on Tuesday that the corporation was finding it difficult to deliver services to members of the two communities. The corporation would be divided into Karnataka Scheduled Caste Development Corporation and Karnataka Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation next month, he said.

He said Rs. 73 crore earmarked in the previous year for granting scholarships for SC and ST students had not been distributed. He had instructed the nodal officers in all districts to identify beneficiaries soon.

To make poor farmers self-reliant, the department had decided to provide all inputs required for cultivation of crops to about 2,000 farmers of Belgaum, Raichur and Chitradurga districts. Farmers who own one hectare of land and belong to SC and ST category would avail the benefit, he said. The depa rtment had decided to provide training in nursing to 3,800 SC and SC girl students this year.
