VIJAYAWADA: World Diabetes Day was observed in several nursing homes on Tuesday. Free diabetes camps were conducted to mark the day. Some nursing homes gave patients discounts in consultation fee, diagnostic tests and medicines. Consulting diabetologist Yalamanchi Sadasiva Rao said diabetes was spreading at a rapid rate in the world. One person was dying of diabetes and two persons were being diagnosed positive for diabetes, every 10 seconds. The number of diabetics had increased to 35 million in the country and their number would double in the next 20 to 25 years.
Detection
He said early detection would go a long way in managing the disease. Persons who were overweight, above 40 years of age, suffering from hypertension and high cholesterol early in their life should be extra cautious. They should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly, Dr Sadasiva Rao said. Women who had several miscarriages were also potential diabetes victims , he said.
Optimum care
He said persons in the high-risk group should ensure that they took optimum diabetic care maintaining fasting blood sugar level of 100, post meal level of 150, blood pressure of 130/80 or 120/80 and LDL cholesterol of less than 100. For men the waist should not exceed 90 cm and women 80 cm, he said.
